SIM Registration: All You Need to Know

To address this influx of spam messages, the Congress of the Philippines enacted Republic Act No. 11934 or the SIM Registration Act. The law aims to stop fraudsters who use SIM cards anonymously for illicit activities. To participate in fighting these cyber-attacks, here is a list of the important things you need to know about the SIM Registration Act:

  1. You may register your SIM cards until 26 April 2023.

All prepaid users have until 26 April 2023 to register their SIM cards with their respective Telcos. Failure to register during the time given will result in its deactivation. If you have multiple SIM cards, however, you must register each of them all under your name. Postpaid users are not required to register their SIM cards anymore.

  1. Foreigners, Minors, and Juridical Entities are also required to register their SIM cards.

If you are a foreigner visiting the Philippines as a tourist, your SIM card is only valid for 30 days and shall be automatically deactivated upon expiration.

If you are below 18 years old, you are also required to register your SIM card in the name of your parent or guardian. However, your parent or guardian must consent to the registration of your SIM card.

Juridical entities may register through their authorized representatives.

  1. Subscriber data will remain confidential.

Section 9 of the SIM Registration Act ensures that subscriber data will remain confidential. In fact, the subscriber data will only be disclosed through a valid court order. The law penalizes any illegal breach of this confidentiality.
